Two questions come up constantly at the fuel pump and at the service counter: should I be using premium? And is ethanol-free gas worth tracking down?
They sound like they might be the same question. They're not. Premium fuel and ethanol-free fuel are different things, and the answer to whether you need either one depends entirely on what you're driving and how you're using it.
Here's the straight answer on both.
Premium Fuel: It's About Octane, Not Quality
"Premium" doesn't mean better fuel. It means higher octane. That distinction matters.
Octane rating measures a fuel's resistance to knocking the uncontrolled, premature combustion that happens in a high compression engine when the fuel air mixture ignites before the spark plug fires. It sounds like a pinging or rattling sound under acceleration and it's bad for the engine if it happens consistently.
High-performance engines, turbocharged engines, and some luxury engines run at higher compression ratios or boost levels that require a fuel with enough octane resistance to prevent knock. For these engines, the manufacturer specifies premium and they mean it. Using regular fuel in an engine that requires premium will cause the engine management system to pull timing (retard the spark) to prevent knock, which reduces power and fuel efficiency. Over time it can cause engine damage.
For engines where the manufacturer recommends premium but doesn't require it, the story is a bit different. These engines can run on regular without damage and the knock sensor and engine management system compensate. You may notice slightly reduced power and fuel economy on regular, because the engine is running a more conservative tune than it was designed for. Whether that trade off is worth the cost difference is your call.
The practical rule: Check your fuel door. If it says "premium required," use premium. If it says "premium recommended," regular is safe but premium will get you closer to the performance the engine was designed to deliver.
What About Your 2012 Acura MDX?
The 2012 Acura MDX is a good example of the "recommended" category. Acura recommends premium for the MDX the engine is tuned to take advantage of it. Running regular won't damage the engine, and the car will drive normally, but you're leaving some efficiency and performance on the table.
For everyday driving and if the cost difference is a concern, regular is acceptable. If you're towing, driving in hilly terrain, or running the car hard, premium gives the engine more room to operate the way it was designed to.
Ethanol-Free Fuel: A Different Question Entirely
Ethanol free fuel sometimes labeled as E0 or pure gas is gasoline with no ethanol blended in. Standard pump gas in the United States is E10, meaning it contains up to 10% ethanol. Some markets have E15 available.
Ethanol has legitimate uses in fuel: it raises octane, it burns cleaner in some respects, and it's domestically produced. But it also has properties that cause problems in certain applications.
Ethanol absorbs water. Over time, ethanol blended fuel can absorb moisture from the air, which leads to phase separation the ethanol and water settle out from the gasoline and sink to the bottom of the tank. In equipment that sits for months between uses, this can clog carburetors and fuel systems badly.
Ethanol can degrade older rubber and plastic components. Fuel systems designed before ethanol blending became standard were built with materials that aren't always compatible with ethanol. Gaskets, seals, and fuel lines in older vehicles and equipment can degrade faster with E10 than with pure gasoline.
Ethanol has lower energy content than pure gasoline. You get slightly fewer BTUs per gallon, which shows up as marginally lower fuel economy usually modest enough not to notice in a modern vehicle, but measurable.
Who Actually Needs Ethanol Free Fuel
For most people driving a modern car made in the last 15 to 20 years: ethanol free fuel is not necessary. Modern fuel systems are designed to handle E10 and in many cases E15. The difference in real-world performance is negligible.
The cases where ethanol free fuel genuinely matters:
Small engines and power equipment. Lawn mowers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, generators, pressure washers, anything with a small carburetor engine that sits unused for weeks or months at a time. Ethanol blended fuel left sitting in a small engine carburetor is one of the most common causes of no start problems in the spring. Ethanol free fuel, or fuel with a stabilizer, dramatically reduces this issue.
Marine engines. Boats and personal watercraft often sit for extended periods and the fuel systems operate in humid environments. Phase separation is a real and documented problem in marine applications. Ethanol free is widely recommended for boats.
Classic and vintage vehicles. Older fuel systems with rubber components that predate ethanol compatibility are legitimate candidates for ethanol-free fuel, particularly if the vehicle sits for extended periods.
Carbureted engines generally. Any engine with a carburetor rather than fuel injection is more susceptible to ethanol related issues the fuel metering is less precise and the system is more exposed to fuel degradation.
For a 2012 Acura MDX with a modern fuel-injected engine? Ethanol-free fuel won't hurt anything, but you're unlikely to notice a meaningful difference in everyday driving. Standard E10 pump gas is what the fuel system was designed for.
